Nature Center, Shaker Historical to host tours of four homes saved by the ‘Freeway Fighters’

In 1963, Cuyahoga County engineer Albert Porter launched a campaign to run the proposed Clark and Lee Freeways through Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights. The freeways would have demolished the Shaker Lakes and the parks surrounding them—prompting outrage among community members.

The Nature Center at Shaker Lakes was created by “Freeway Fighters” in 1966, a group made up in part by many women’s organizations that were fundamental in blocking the highways. They argued the purpose of creating Nature Center was to preserve, highlight, and educate people about the wetlands, greenspace and environmental significance of the Doan Brook watershed, and the freeways would destroy the greenspace.

Thanks in part to the work of the Freeway Fighters, Ohio Governor James Rhodes scrapped the freeway plans in February 1970.

On Sunday, April 6, step back in time and experience the history of Shaker Heights, the Shaker Parklands, and the Freeway Fight in a new and exciting way with the Nature Center and Shaker Historical Society when they present the Historic Homes Tour: Parkland Proximity. With sweeping views and access to preserved parklands, this year’s homes will not disappoint.

The tour focuses on four homes on South Park, West Park, and Shaker Boulevards—from French Colonial, to Tudor, to mid-century modern architecture—with views of or within walking distance to the natural beauty of the Shaker Parklands.

The program begins at 10 a.m. at the Nature Center, 2600 South Park Blvd., with a presentation and brunch by Kiln, Sophie La Gourmande, Cleveland Breakfast Club, Haute Donuts, and Verbena Free Spirited, followed by a trolley tour of the stunning homes.

The Historic Homes tour runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6 (Inclement Weather Date is April 13). Please list any food/drink allergies or restrictions during registration. Wear shoes that are easy to remove. Booties provided, or bring house shoes. Attendees must be able to navigate stairs.

Tickets are limited and cost $160 per person, $125 for Nature Center or Shaker Historical Society Members with membership ID and code HHT2025.
