Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument hosts September 11 memorial service

Each year on September 11, the Cuyahoga County Soldiers’ & Sailors' Monument hosts a memorial service to honor the memory of those lost their lives in the worst terrorist attack in United States history.

Twenty-three years later, tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 11, people will gather at the monument in Public Square to remember and stand with the families and friends of the people who perished in New York City, Arlington, Virginia, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The two-part ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a Facebook Live Stream inside the Memorial Room of the Monument—marking the time of each of the significant moments in the timeline of September 11, 2001 attacks. The public is welcome to attend the in-person ceremony.

The second part of the ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. outside on the northwest corner of the Monument's walkway, where a formal public memorial service will be held. Monument commissioner Jon Silvis, who worked as the quality control (Fuels) supervisor for Air Services of Cleveland on September 11, will deliver a keynote address.

An exhibit will be held inside the Soldiers & Sailors Monument to remember those lost that day, particularly those with a Northern Ohio connection.

Attendees are encouraged to mark the day with their own remembrances in an interactive memory wall within the exhibit as well. RSVP to Becky Voldrich.

Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument is located at 3 Public Square in downtown Cleveland. The Monument commemorates the Civil War and honors the citizens of Cuyahoga County who fought and worked for the Union.
