The Sculpture Center will host native Clevelander and internationally-recognized artist Daniel Arsham in his inaugural solo exhibition “Score and Sound,” opening Friday, Nov. 3.
Born in Cleveland the first-ever Cleveland Cavaliers’ creative director, Arsham draws on Cleveland’s rich sporting and musical traditions in “Score and Sound.” His art is known for boundary-breaking collaborations that fuse contemporary art with design, architecture, sports, film, and fashion.
With nearly 30 sculptures, the exhibit will feature Arsham’s iconic, eroded cultural relics—sculptural works that invite viewers to reflect upon the material and cultural histories of everyday objects, such as Walkmans, cameras, baseball gloves, and basketball hoops.
Each sculpture serves as an archaeological artifact of transformation, unveiling layers of histories, narratives, and evolutions in the cultural realm and challenging perceptions of time and reality.
Daniel Arsham“It is an honor to present the first solo exhibition of my work in my hometown of Cleveland at The Sculpture Center,” said Arsham in a statement. “For this show, I have reflected on the city’s cultural history and traditions—particularly those of sport and music relevant to the city and serve as consistent influences on my practice.”
Arsham’s concept of archeological fiction takes on renewed resonance in conjunction with the inaugural opening of The Sculpture Center’s historic gallery space on Euclid Avenue. Nestled across from Lake View Cemetery, the space was once a showroom for burial monuments.
The historic building is at the center of The Sculpture Center’s own transformative growth, as it expands the scope of its programs while prioritizing community-driven and socially relevant exhibitions.
The Sculpture Center executive director Grace Chin said in a statement, “We are honored to partner with the Daniel Arsham Studio, Library Street Collective, and the Cleveland Cavaliers to present Daniel’s homecoming exhibition in Cleveland…. This exhibition furthers our mission to celebrate contemporary sculpture and to welcome diverse Cleveland communities seeking meaningful experiences.”
“Score and Sound” runs through January 27 and is free and open to the public.
A public opening will be held at The Sculpture Center on Friday, Nov. 3. from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advance. Reservations for timed viewings on Saturday, Nov. 4 must also be made in advance.
