Break out the neon, tease up that hair, and prepare to bust a move this coming Friday, March 6 in honor of Women’s History Month —the 1980s are taking over Cleveland Museum of Art with March MIX: Material Girl—celebrating the iconic women who defined a decade of big hair, bold style, and an unforgettable pop energy.
From the boundary-breaking anthems of Madonna to the soaring ballads of Whitney Houston, the funky grooves of Janet Jackson, the cool edge of Blondie, and the smooth sophistication of Sade and Kate Bush, the dance floor will pulse with all the hits that made the ’80s unforgettable.
Everyone is invited to join in, whether channeling diva energy or just ready to get fresh on the dance floor.
DJ BG will spin a mix of synth-pop classics, alternative ’80s gems, and dance-floor favorites at MIX: Material Girl.Get into the groove
Spinning the Material Girl soundtrack are two of Cleveland’s favorite DJs from 91.1 WRUW-FM: DJ Mimi Dromette and DJ BG (Bridget D Ginley).
Expect a back-and-forth of synth-pop classics, alternative ’80s gems, and dance floor favorites pulled from crates of vinyl—all curated with the deep love of music and community that both DJs are known for.
Dromette co-created Cleveland’s largest goth dance event, Dark Wave Dance Cave at the Winchester Music Tavern in Lakewood, while BG hosts “Erie Effusion,” a live 91.1 radio show broadcast on Sundays and highlighting alternative ’80s tracks from Case Western Reserve University’s legendary vinyl collection within the Kulas Music Collection in the Kelvin Smith Library.
Together, DJ Mimi and DJ BG deliver Flashdance energy with a side of cassette-mixtape nostalgia, when they alternate throughout the MIX: Material Girl evening in one-hour shifts. DJ Mimi kicks off the tunes at 6 p.m. and DJ BG closes out the night from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
