Guests sipped wine as they took their seats adjacent to the runway, overlooking a Lake Erie summer sunset. The evening’s mood evoked the splashy glam-rock era of the 1970s and 1980s.

At the Glam Rock Runway Show, a DJ was spinning iconic ‘80s and ‘90s tunes as models tore up the runway. Fashions featured asymmetrical shapes that included stars and 5-point flowers; bright reds, pinks, and magentas; belted waist bags; black gloves; and sheer materials covering utility-based undergarments.

A former contestant on the 2010 Season 8 Project Runway, Mayén paid homage to the era with her newest collection for her Yellowcake Clothing brand—her signature line of women’s outerwear and accessories at her Yellowcake Shop Clothing, 6706 Detroit Ave. in the Detroit Shoreway.

Mayén prides herself on designing and crafting high-quality luxury pieces that deliver value to customers while contributing to a better world. Since its inception in 2009, 5% of Yellowcake’s profits have benefited nonprofit organizations, many of which are targeted at relieving hunger, homelessness, and poverty in Northeast Ohio.

A few designs included accessorized helmets for those who are on the go with scooters or bikes.

Backstage, Mayén met with potential customers as her daughters flitted comfortably around between vendors and models. Clearly, fashion is a family business for Mayén. She continues to be a creative to watch—turning out culturally-relevant real-world designs for today’s woman.
