South Euclid may usually be like any other suburb on the East Side of Cleveland most of the year, but as the dog days of summer arrive in late August, this city really starts heating up.
For the 11th time, South Euclid is about to repeat the heat wave on Friday, Aug. 22 and Saturday, Aug. 23, when it hosts its Annual Rock the Block signature music, food, and fun festival with an expanded footprint in South Euclid’s Downtown District, three stages, and its biggest headliner to date—Welshly Arms.
This year, most of the activity centers around the South Euclid Food Truck Park by the intersection of Mayfield and South Green Roads at 4477 Rushton Road.
"The best part about Rock the Block is the music," says South Euclid Parks and Recreation director and one of the Rock the Block organizers, Daniel Subwick. "The Greater Cleveland area has an astounding number of talented musicians, and Rock the Block is the perfect place to highlight them."
Da Land Brass BandThis year, 14 musicians and bands will perform on three stages, which is an expansion from previous years. Two stages will operate simultaneously, with a third side stage activating between sets.
In addition to Welshly Arms, the music lineup includes local favorites and nationally-recognized acts like Apostle Jones, Hubbs Groove, Da Land Brass Band, School of Rock Headliners.
"Welshly Arms is definitely the biggest band we've ever had in the city of South Euclid," says Subwick. "Their [show] is legendary, and they just got back from a tour in Germany... They regularly sell out the House of Blues."
Jinari Kemet and the Black JacketsSubwick is particularly excited that vocalist Chayla Hope will be making her South Euclid debut on Saturday night on the Food Truck Park stage. “Chayla Hope is just a resonating voice throughout the Cleveland music scene, so we're really excited to have her,” he says. “She hasn't performed in South Euclid at any of our events, so to have her opening up on Saturday is going to be a real special treat.”
Friday's performances begin at 6 p.m. with simultaneous sets by Jinari Kemet and the Black Jackets and Lily A. The evening continues with Frida + the Mann.
Rounding out Friday night's lineup are local saxophone artist Andre Cavor of South Euclid’s own Cavor Entertainment and wedding band favorite Perfect Choice Band.
Saturday's music schedule kicks off at 2 p.m. with Hubbs Groove, followed by Chayla Hope. Subwick predicts Da Land Brass Band will be one of the many Saturday highlights.
"They have all these brass instruments that really just—man, it's just like a sucker punch of music," Subwick says enthusiastically.
Win $1,000 in the Karaoke Contest at Black Forest Bar and GrillThe festival will also feature a popular karaoke contest with a $1,000 prize at neighborhood watering hole Black Forest Bar and Grill.
Popular Latin band Son Gitano will play Saturday, and Rubix's Groove will make its first appearance at Rock the Block. “Rubix's Groove is a whole other vibe,” says Subwick. “They’re just very talented musicians.”
Subwick says a Saturday night feature is Akron-based The Michael Weber Show.
“It's hard to describe a guitarist of [Michael Weber’s] talent and ability," notes Subwick. "He's literally playing the guitar with his teeth, on his back, in the crowd, jumping around, and then hops back on stage and starts singing and wailing away. He's truly a guitar God in my eyes."
Apostle Jones is another Saturday headliner before Welshly Arms takes the stage.
In addition to two days of music, a host of local food trucks will be at Rock the Block to satisfy virtually any craving, including 2024 National Fried Chicken Festival finalist Grippy's Sauce Company, Celestial Treats, Garbage Kids Vegan, Tropical Snow CLE, The Urban Wrap Company, and Zovo.
A full bar will be available, and One South Euclid will be selling water and soft drinks to support its neighborhood grants program.
The rock wall is one of the many family-friendly activities at Rock the BlockFamily activities include inflatables, a rock wall, a gaming truck, and the return of last year's popular foam pit. The IndyGreen Market will host vendors and artisans, while community organizations will provide information about local resources and services.
South Euclid Planning and Development director Michael Love says the impact Rock the Block has on South Euclid and Greater Cleveland is beneficial.
The famous foam pit at Rock the Block"Moving [Rock the Block] to the food truck park and the surrounding area obviously increases the footprint of the event and allows the event to grow so bigger and better than ever,” he says. “Anything we can do to make the event more and more of a regional draw is great because it brings people to South Euclid and particularly to our downtown business district where we hope they will come and see all that South Euclid has to offer."
The festival's official parking will be at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, 1545 South Green Road. Additional parking is available at various locations throughout the South Euclid Downtown District.
Rock the Block runs Friday, Aug. 22 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 23 from 2 p.m. to11 p.m. Stay up to date on the latest details on Rock the Block’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
